BAMBOOZLE – Paint My Candy by Jessica Gorlicky
Seven Continents brought the fashion and art masses together recently for Bamboozle – “a celebration of art and fashion in its many incarnations.” The company’s north-end warehouse transformed into a candy-coated wonderland; featuring four “Pop Shops” showcasing the talents of Cindy Rendely OBJEX for jewellery, Cydelic by Choryin for accessories, Provocative for lingerie, and X-Crated for shoes; all of which helped to celebrate the lunch of SEVENup Retail.
Pulling in the art side of things, we saw the introduction of Indonesian painter and sculptor Andi Ramdani whose 60’ Bamboo Saurus Rex was beyond impressive, and a huge feature of Jessica Gorlicky’s “PAINT MY CANDY” series.
The main space was truly something to be admired. The energy was electric – and not just because of the body painted dancers. The “something” in the air could be largely attributed to Gorlicky’s creations which filled the walls with bright colours and bold patterns. Many paintings featured female subjects, and a series of pieces focusing on the mouth and candy were particularly admirable, offering a good bit of realism, but enough abstract colour usage to keep things interesting.
The Toronto-based artist is also a pro at live performance art, being commissioned to paint for, get this: Coca-Cola, Cirque de Soleil, Vancouver Winter Olympics, Revlon and the list goes on. No doubt her flair for the dramatic makes her the perfect candidate for live art instalments. If you want to have a look at some of her live creations, follow through to the Youtube channel.
