HIPNAUTIC
Gemine Design’s HipNautic Collection has a colourful 80’s nautical theme and is made up of entirely up-cycled materials. The nautical theme is inspired by the issues and negative impacts the fashion industry has on our water systems. For some context there are some really resourceful quotes from River Blue The Movie and Fashion Revolution that inspire this collection such as;
“It takes 2729 litres of water to make 1 T-Shirt. That’s how much we normally drink over a 3 year period”.
“Clothes and textiles are the #1 source of primary micro plastic to the oceans, accounting for the 34.8 % of the global total”.
My goal is to show this collection as a sustainably stylish way to make a difference and help minimize the damage done to our water systems by the fashion industry.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
The Toronto based brand, Gemine Design was established in 2016 by Michelle Good. Gemine Design is a contemporary, sustainable line of accessories and apparel made from new and reused materials. Michelle is a self-taught artist and designer who is passionate about reclaiming the lost and forgotten and has created an online fashion revival. My inspiration as a designer comes from the story of an elderly couple who were asked by a reporter “How have you managed to stay together for 65 years?!” The women replied “We were born in a time where if something were broken, we would fix it, not just throw it away.” This is a mindset that is becoming lost in our time and as a result I have fallen in love with the idea of giving new life to the broken and forsaken. Gemine Design understands that that clothing and accessories should be a form of self-expression, allowing people to express themselves confidently.
